Boyu Wang

Hello!

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography at the University at Buffalo, advised by Dr. Andrew Crooks. My research combines agent-based modeling, geographic information science, and machine learning to study human behavior in spatial environments. I develop geographically explicit models, and investigate how large language models can represent agents’ decision-making and interactions.

I am the primary maintainer of Mesa-Geo and Mesa-LLM, which extend the Mesa agent-based modeling framework with GIS capabilities and LLM-based agents. My open-source responsibilities also include serving as a maintainer of Mesa, and as a primary mentor for Google Summer of Code projects on Mesa-LLM in 2025 and Mesa-Geo in 2026.

Before beginning my Ph.D., I worked as a data scientist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s APAC Innovation Center in Singapore and a Lead R&D Engineer at TUMCREATE, with earlier roles at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre and Cognizant. I hold an M.Sc. and a B.Sc. in Physics from the National University of Singapore.
